Kolkata, West Bengal: West Bengal is set to begin preparations for the nationwide Census 2027 exercise from August 1, with authorities urging citizens to actively participate in the process. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari appealed to residents to cooperate with officials and make full use of the new digital features being introduced for the first time in the census process.
Speaking at a workshop on Census 2027, Adhikari described the exercise as extremely important and called for widespread public participation. He said the census process in the state would commence on August 1 and continue until the end of February next year, with several stages of data collection and verification planned during the period.
According to Adhikari, two major features are being introduced in this census exercise. One is the digital mode of data collection, while the other is the facility for self-enumeration, allowing citizens to submit their details electronically. He noted that these features were not available during the last census conducted in 2011.
The Chief Minister said that many states across India have already made significant progress in adopting the new census-related systems and stressed the need for West Bengal to keep pace with the rest of the country. He urged citizens to cooperate with officials during the stipulated timeline to ensure the successful completion of the exercise.
“We seek the cooperation of the public and all stakeholders from August 1 onwards. Census data is extremely important for planning and governance,” Adhikari said during the workshop.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the significance of census data for West Bengal, particularly due to the state’s long international border with Bangladesh. He stated that accurate demographic data would be crucial for policy formulation and future development planning.
The Census 2027 exercise is expected to be one of the largest data collection initiatives in the country, with digital technology playing a major role in the enumeration process. Officials believe that the introduction of self-enumeration and online data submission will help improve efficiency and accuracy while reducing paperwork.
The state government has appealed to residents to participate actively and provide accurate information during the census period. Authorities are expected to conduct awareness campaigns in the coming weeks to familiarize citizens with the new digital system and self-enumeration process.
With the rollout scheduled to begin on August 1, the census exercise is expected to provide critical demographic and socio-economic data that will help guide government planning and public service delivery in the years ahead.
