Guwahati: Assam has announced a major relief and rehabilitation package for flood-affected areas of Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat, with financial assistance for families, support for students and schools, and plans for restoring damaged infrastructure.
The principal allocations announced by the state government amount to around ₹186 crore, covering direct assistance to affected households as well as educational support following the recent floods.
As part of the relief measures, the government has released ₹54 crore to provide an additional ₹2,500 to beneficiaries of the Orunodoi scheme in the three affected districts. Another ₹112 crore has been earmarked for financial assistance to flood-affected families. Under this assistance, eligible families will receive ₹15,000 in the first phase and ₹10,000 in the second phase.
The government has also announced measures to help students return to normal academic activities after the disruption caused by the floods. Around ₹9 crore has been sanctioned for free textbooks, while nearly ₹7 crore has been allocated for providing two sets of school uniforms. A further ₹4.50 crore has been set aside for books.
More than 400 government schools affected by the floods have been sanctioned ₹2 lakh each for cleaning, repairs and restoration, according to the government.
Damage assessment will also be undertaken in Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat. Dedicated teams comprising teachers, Gaon Pradhans and Mandals will be involved in assessing the extent of losses in the affected areas.
Road restoration is another key component of the recovery programme. The government has announced that reconstruction work on damaged roads in the three districts will begin in September.
Financial assistance has also been approved for damaged religious and community institutions. Naamghars and other religious institutions will receive ₹1.50 lakh each for reconstruction, while affected Anganwadi centres will receive ₹2 lakh each.
Families who lost members in the floods will receive ₹9 lakh each as compensation. The amount comprises ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The government’s relief announcements have also triggered a political response. BJP spokesperson Pranjal Kalita accused the Opposition of attempting to politicise the flood situation and misleading the public about the government’s relief efforts. He said the state government remained focused on relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in the affected districts.
The latest measures are aimed at supporting affected households while restoring schools, roads and other community infrastructure damaged by the floods. Further implementation of the relief package will depend on the ongoing assessment of damage across the three districts.
