Assam Government Brings Directorate of Economics and Statistics Under Finance Department

Guwahati: The Assam Government has placed the Directorate of Economics and Statistics under the administrative control of the Finance (Economic Affairs) Department with immediate effect as part of an administrative restructuring aimed at improving coordination and operational efficiency.

The decision was announced through a notification issued by the Finance Department, which stated that the move is intended to strengthen administrative oversight and ensure the smooth functioning of the Directorate.

To facilitate the transition, the General Administration Department (GAD) has been directed to transfer officers and staff currently serving in the Directorate under the Transformation and Development Department to the Finance (Economic Affairs) Department. The transfer is expected to ensure continuity in day-to-day operations and prevent any disruption to the Directorate’s functioning.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics is responsible for collecting, compiling and analysing socio-economic data that supports government planning, policy formulation and development initiatives across Assam.

Officials said the administrative realignment is aimed at streamlining the Directorate’s functioning by bringing it under the Finance Department, which plays a central role in economic planning and fiscal management. The new arrangement has come into force with immediate effect, and the concerned departments have been instructed to complete the transition without affecting ongoing work.
