The Assam government has approved an additional ₹100 crore for the development of new infrastructure at Guwahati Science City, with the larger project targeted for completion by March 2027.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviewed the progress of the Science City during a visit to the Sonapur facility on August 10. He inspected the ongoing construction and discussed preparations for the next phase of development.
Built across more than 150 bighas of land, the Science City has seen additional construction and infrastructure work since its inauguration earlier this year.
The fresh allocation will be used to develop several new facilities, including a digital panorama, convention centre, musical fountain and additional parking space. Other supporting infrastructure is also planned as part of the expansion.
The project is being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Assam Department of Science and Technology.
Sarma said the state government wants to develop Guwahati Science City as one of the leading science-focused public attractions in the country. He also called on school and college students to visit the facility and make use of its educational and scientific resources.
The government is additionally considering a dedicated ASTC bus service between Guwahati and Science City to improve public connectivity and make the facility easier to access.
Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, Food and Public Distribution Minister Kaushik Rai, and senior government officials were present during the Chief Minister’s inspection.
The proposed additions are expected to further expand the facilities available at Science City and strengthen its role as an educational and public science destination in Assam.
