Barpeta Road, June 1: Concerns over food safety have emerged in Assam after allegations surfaced that vegetables sold in a market at Barpeta Road were being treated with artificial chemical dyes to make them appear fresher and more attractive to consumers.
A video report from the local vegetable market purportedly showed green colour washing off pointed gourds (potol/parwal), raising questions about the use of chemical substances on produce before sale. The report alleged that some traders were applying colouring agents to vegetables and distributing them to different parts of the state.
According to the report, the practice is allegedly being carried out to enhance the appearance of vegetables and increase their market value. The report further claimed that such substances could pose potential health risks if consumed by unsuspecting customers.
During the investigation, a person at the market was seen disputing the allegations and claimed that similar practices were common in vegetable markets. However, no official confirmation regarding the use of chemical dyes has yet been issued by the authorities.
The allegations have sparked concern among consumers and prompted calls for immediate intervention by the Food Safety Department and other relevant authorities. Residents have demanded inspections and laboratory testing of vegetable samples to determine whether harmful chemicals are being used.
Food safety experts generally advise consumers to wash vegetables thoroughly before cooking and to purchase produce from trusted sources whenever possible.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the matter. Whether an inquiry will be initiated and what action may be taken against those allegedly involved remains to be seen.
