Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi has raised serious concerns regarding Waqf properties in Uttar Pradesh, claiming that a large number of such properties allegedly do not have proper legal documentation.
Speaking during a public address, Owaisi said that Uttar Pradesh has around 1.21 lakh Waqf properties, out of which nearly 1.12 lakh allegedly lack valid documents or legal records. He warned that if provisions related to “Waqf by user” are removed under the proposed law, many properties could become vulnerable to encroachment and ownership disputes.
During his speech, Owaisi questioned who would ultimately take control of these properties if their legal status is weakened. He stated that in the absence of proper legal proof, unauthorized persons could occupy such lands and buildings.
Referring to the issue, Owaisi said:
“If this law is implemented, then what will happen to those Waqf properties that do not have documents? If ‘Waqf by user’ ends, who will take over those properties?”
The AIMIM chief further argued that many historical Waqf properties have been recognized through long-term religious and community usage rather than formal paperwork. According to him, removing such recognition could create legal uncertainty over thousands of properties.
The remarks come amid ongoing national discussions surrounding Waqf property regulations and proposed legal reforms. Political parties and community organizations have continued to debate the implications of changes related to Waqf administration, ownership verification, and property protection.
No official response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding Owaisi’s specific claims had been issued at the time of publishing this report.
