Dibrugarh’s Assam Medical College Expands Skin Care Facilities with New Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre

Dibrugarh, November 3, 2026: Patients requiring specialised skin treatments and aspiring dermatologists are set to benefit from a new medical facility at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where a dedicated Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre has been inaugurated.

The development marks another addition to the institution’s healthcare infrastructure, with the facility intended to support specialised dermatological procedures and strengthen practical training opportunities for postgraduate medical students.

Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal announced the development through his official X account, emphasising the importance of improving healthcare infrastructure to build a healthier Assam.

New Facility to Support Specialised Skin Care

The establishment of the operation theatre at the Department of Dermatology is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide specialised treatment for patients with skin-related medical conditions.

Dermatosurgery involves surgical techniques used by dermatologists to diagnose and manage certain skin disorders. A dedicated operation theatre can provide an appropriate clinical setting for such procedures, depending on the equipment, personnel and services available.

The facility is particularly relevant for patients in Dibrugarh and neighbouring districts who rely on Assam Medical College for specialist medical care.

While the announcement highlights improved access to dermatological treatments, the hospital has not specified the full range of procedures to be performed in the newly inaugurated theatre.

Postgraduate Medical Training Receives a Boost

An important aspect of the new facility is its potential contribution to medical education.

Postgraduate dermatology students will have additional opportunities to observe and participate in specialised procedures under appropriate supervision, allowing them to develop essential clinical and surgical skills.

Practical exposure forms a crucial part of specialist medical education, helping students translate theoretical knowledge into clinical expertise.

The dedicated operation theatre is expected to strengthen this component of training while supporting the Department of Dermatology’s academic and clinical activities.

Ashok Singhal Highlights Healthcare Development

Sharing the development on X, Minister Ashok Singhal linked the inauguration to the broader objective of strengthening Assam’s healthcare system.

He described improvements in medical infrastructure as important steps towards achieving the vision of “Swasthyawan Samaj, Swasthyawan Assam.”

Singhal said the new operation theatre would improve access to specialised skin treatments and offer postgraduate students valuable hands-on experience and opportunities for professional skill development.

The minister also acknowledged the contributions of Professor Dr. Shyamanta Barua, Head of the Department of Dermatology, and Professor Dr. Sanjeeb Kakati, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital.

He appreciated the collective efforts of the medical college team in establishing the facility.

Strengthening Healthcare Services in Upper Assam

Assam Medical College and Hospital has long served as a major medical education and treatment centre for Upper Assam and neighbouring areas of Northeast India.

The institution provides medical services across multiple specialities while training undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals.

The addition of the dedicated Dermatosurgery Operation Theatre is expected to strengthen its dermatology services by supporting clinical treatment and specialist training within the same department.

The initiative also highlights the role of government medical colleges in developing specialised healthcare facilities outside major metropolitan centres.

With the inauguration of the new theatre, the Department of Dermatology gains additional infrastructure intended to benefit both patients and future medical specialists.
