The proposed high-speed rail extension from Siliguri to Guwahati is expected to strengthen connectivity between Assam and northern India, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment.
Guwahati, November 2, 2026: Travelling between Assam and the national capital could become significantly faster in the coming years, with the Centre approving the proposed extension of the Northern high-speed rail corridor to Guwahati.
The development brings the Northeast a step closer to joining India’s planned bullet train network, with Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma indicating that the journey between Delhi and Guwahati could eventually take less than eight hours.
The announcement follows discussions between the Assam government and the Union Ministry of Railways over extending the high-speed rail project beyond Siliguri in West Bengal.
Guwahati Included in Proposed Northern Bullet Train Corridor
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on October 31 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the Northern high-speed rail corridor, which aims to improve connectivity across northern and eastern India.
The proposed network will connect several major cities, including Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Patna and Siliguri, along with Delhi and Guwahati.
The original high-speed rail proposal covered two major sections: Delhi to Varanasi and Varanasi to Siliguri. Both corridors were included in the Union Budget 2026–27.
The planned extension to Guwahati would take the network into the Northeast, creating a direct high-speed passenger rail connection between Assam and important urban centres across northern and eastern India.
Assam Government’s Proposal Leads to Extension
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the Centre’s decision on Sunday, November 1, and acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
According to Sarma, the initial proposal did not include Guwahati as a destination, prompting the Assam government to seek an extension of the route.
In a letter dated June 7, 2026, the Chief Minister urged the Railway Ministry to include Guwahati, highlighting its importance as the principal commercial and transportation gateway to the Northeast.
Sarma subsequently discussed the proposal with Vaishnaw during a meeting in July. The Chief Minister said the Railway Minister considered the state’s request and agreed to extend the proposed corridor into Assam.
Delhi-Guwahati Journey Could Take Less Than Eight Hours
One of the most significant anticipated benefits of the bullet train project is the reduction in long-distance passenger travel time.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed high-speed service could bring the Delhi-Guwahati journey below eight hours once the corridor becomes operational.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw has also outlined indicative travel times for other sections of the network, including approximately three hours and 35 minutes between Delhi and Varanasi.
The proposed high-speed services are intended to offer faster intercity travel and improved access to important commercial, educational and tourism centres.
However, the projected journey times will depend on the final alignment, station arrangements, operating speeds and completion of the railway infrastructure.
High-Speed Connectivity Could Support Assam’s Economic Growth
The Assam Chief Minister linked the proposed railway expansion with the state’s efforts to attract investment in technology-driven and other emerging industries.
Improved passenger connectivity with Delhi and major cities in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal could make business travel more convenient while supporting tourism and employment-related mobility.
The proposed corridor could also improve access to markets and business centres for entrepreneurs and professionals travelling between Assam and other parts of the country.
Sarma described the prospect of bullet train services reaching Assam as an aspiration that once appeared difficult to achieve.
He expressed confidence that improved transport infrastructure would create additional opportunities for businesses and livelihoods across the region.
Project Timeline and Construction Details Awaited
Although the extension has received approval as announced by the Centre and the Assam Chief Minister, several important aspects of the project are yet to be finalised publicly.
Detailed information regarding the final route alignment, station locations, estimated construction costs, implementation schedule and commencement of passenger services is still awaited.
The Northern high-speed rail corridor forms part of India’s broader plans to develop faster passenger transportation between major cities.
For Assam and the wider Northeast, the inclusion of Guwahati represents a significant development in long-term railway connectivity planning. The eventual benefits will depend on the project’s implementation and the accessibility of the proposed services.
