Guwahati, September 6, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Vice President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan to Guwahati on Sunday, marking the Vice President’s maiden visit to Assam since assuming office.
Taking to social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he was honoured to welcome the Vice President to the state and noted that Shri Radhakrishnan would participate in several programmes during his visit.
The Vice President arrived in Guwahati on September 6 as part of a four-day visit to the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh from September 6 to 9. The visit includes a series of academic, cultural and public engagements.
During his stay in Assam, Vice President Radhakrishnan is scheduled to attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College, formerly known as Kanya Mahavidyalaya, in Guwahati. He will also attend the convocation ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) in the city.
On September 7, the Vice President is scheduled to visit Gauhati University, where he will participate in a foundation stone laying programme and interact with students, faculty members and leading citizens at the university’s Convention Centre. He will subsequently proceed to Shillong as part of his northeastern tour.
The visit comes nearly a year after C. P. Radhakrishnan assumed office as Vice President of India on September 12, 2025. According to the official Vice President of India website, he is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
The Vice President’s Assam visit is expected to provide an opportunity for interaction with academic institutions, students and citizens, besides highlighting the importance of educational and public engagements in the region.
