Assam STF Seizes Heroin Worth Over Rs 3 Crore in Guwahati, Three Held

Guwahati: A late-night intelligence-led operation by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police has resulted in the seizure of nearly 400 grams of suspected heroin and the apprehension of three alleged drug traffickers in Guwahati.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the action in a post on X, describing it as an intelligence-driven operation and stating that the seized heroin was valued at more than Rs 3 crore.

According to STF-linked reports, the operation was conducted during the intervening night of August 27 and 28, 2026, following specific information about the transportation of narcotics. STF personnel intercepted a vehicle at Sonkochi Path in Beharbari, Guwahati, under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 37 soap cases containing suspected heroin, weighing 397 grams in net weight. The suspected contraband was concealed in two bags inside the vehicle, according to reports based on information provided by the STF.

The three persons apprehended in connection with the seizure were identified as Kiron Singha, 49, of Cachar district in Assam; S. Nengpi Vaiphei, 36, of Imphal East in Manipur; and Ngaineichong, 41, of Churachandpur in Manipur.

The STF also seized Rs 21,000 in cash, mobile phones, SIM cards, two bags and the vehicle allegedly used for transporting the suspected narcotics. A case has been registered at the STF Police Station as STF PS Case No. 08/2026.

The investigation is continuing, with authorities seeking to establish the source and intended destination of the suspected heroin and identify other people who may be connected to the alleged trafficking network.

The operation is part of the Assam Police STF’s continuing action against organised crime and narcotics. According to the official Assam Police website, the STF has a statewide mandate covering organised crime, including drugs, narcotics and smuggling, in addition to other serious offences.

The STF, Assam, is headed by P.S. Mahanta, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, IGP (Traffic & Road Safety) and Chief of STF, Assam. The official Assam Police website lists Pranab Kumar Pegu, APS, as Senior Superintendent of Police (V&AC-N) and Superintendent of Police, STF, Assam.

The latest seizure adds to the state’s ongoing campaign against narcotics trafficking, with Assam authorities continuing intelligence-based operations to disrupt drug supply networks operating through the Northeast.
