Guwahati: Guwahati is set to gain another direct international air connection, with IndiGo scheduled to launch non-stop flights between Guwahati and Bangkok from October 27, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.
The new route is expected to provide passengers from Assam and the wider Northeast with a more convenient connection to Thailand while strengthening Guwahati’s links with Southeast Asia.
Sarma announced the development through a post on X, describing Bangkok as the next international destination to be added after Guwahati’s new connections with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He said the new service would create another gateway to Southeast Asia and could give fresh momentum to tourism, trade and travel.
The announcement was also shared by the Chief Minister’s Office, Assam, which confirmed that IndiGo would operate the direct Guwahati-Bangkok service from October 27.
New international link for Northeast India
The proposed Bangkok connection is expected to make travel between Assam and Thailand easier by providing a direct option for passengers who currently rely on connecting flights.
Beyond passenger convenience, the route could strengthen links between Assam and Southeast Asia in areas such as tourism, business and cultural exchange. It may also make it easier for international visitors to access Guwahati and other destinations across the Northeast.
The development comes as Guwahati expands its international aviation network. The city has recently added direct international connections with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and the Bangkok service would further widen the range of overseas destinations accessible from the Northeast’s principal aviation gateway.
Guwahati’s role as regional aviation gateway
The addition of Bangkok is significant because of the city’s geographical position and Assam’s links with Southeast Asia. A direct connection to Thailand could provide additional opportunities for tourism operators, businesses and travellers across the Northeast.
The route is also being viewed as part of the broader expansion of Guwahati’s international connectivity, potentially strengthening the city’s position as an aviation gateway for the region.
Assam Minister Kaushik Rai also welcomed the announcement, saying the new service would bring Bangkok closer to Guwahati and could further support the state’s tourism, trade and travel potential. Rai is currently a Cabinet Minister in the Assam government, with official portfolios including Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs, Housing & Urban Affairs, and Cooperation.
IndiGo expanding India-Thailand network
The Guwahati announcement comes as IndiGo continues to expand its international network to Thailand. The airline recently announced non-stop flights between Gaya and Bangkok, beginning October 26, 2026, adding another Indian city to its Thailand network.
IndiGo currently operates Bangkok services from several Indian cities, and its expansion of Thailand connectivity is creating additional travel options between India and Southeast Asia.
For passengers in Assam and neighbouring northeastern states, the new Guwahati-Bangkok service could reduce the need for connecting journeys and provide a more direct route to Thailand.
Further details regarding the flight number, frequency, departure and arrival timings are expected to be provided by the airline as the launch date approaches.
