GUWAHATI: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has strengthened its push towards renewable energy, adding 23.7 MWp of solar power capacity between January and July 2026. According to NFR, this was the highest solar capacity commissioned among all Indian Railways zones during the period.
With the latest additions, NFR’s total installed solar capacity has reached 42.1 MWp, marking significant progress in its solarisation programme that began in 2011. NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the Lumding Division, including the Guwahati section, leads with 17.7 MWp of installed capacity, followed by the Rangiya Division with 9.6 MWp.
The railway network has also reported substantial financial benefits from solar energy. During the 2025–26 financial year, NFR generated around 114 lakh units of solar power, resulting in savings of approximately Rs 8.6 crore. The organisation has a further 9 MWp of solar capacity under implementation across its divisions, with major projects planned in Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar.
