GUWAHATI: Road connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya has returned to normal after several days of disruptions, protests and blockades that had affected the movement of vehicles in the region.
Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora announced on Sunday that regular vehicular movement has resumed both along the Assam-Meghalaya route and within parts of Meghalaya where restrictions had been imposed.
According to Bora, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed him about the restoration of normal traffic after the Meghalaya government held discussions with organisations involved in the protests.
The disruption in movement followed a violent incident in Shillong earlier this week, which triggered protests and road blockades. Vehicles travelling between the two neighbouring states were among those affected during the period of unrest.
Welcoming the restoration of normalcy, Bora credited the intervention of the leadership of both states and thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking swift steps to address the situation. He also acknowledged Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for his efforts to bring the situation under control through dialogue and cooperation.
The Assam minister further expressed gratitude to the various organisations, groups and stakeholders who withdrew the blockades and responded positively to appeals aimed at restoring peace.
Bora said the development marked an important step towards easing tensions and resuming normal interaction between the two states.
Emphasising the close relationship between Assam and Meghalaya, he said the two states share long-standing cultural, economic and social connections that go beyond geographical boundaries.
He appealed to all sections of society to continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and ensure that harmony and cooperation prevail between the neighbouring states.
