Himanta Biswa Sarma Reaffirms Assam Government’s Commitment to Senior Citizens on World Senior Citizens Day

Guwahati, August 21: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday extended his greetings to senior citizens, recognising the role of older generations in shaping society through their experience, wisdom and lifelong contributions.

Marking World Senior Citizens Day, the Chief Minister said the sacrifices and guidance of elderly citizens have played an important part in building families, communities and society as a whole.

In a message shared on social media, Sarma also reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to ensuring that senior citizens are able to live with dignity, care and support.

Highlighting measures introduced by the state government, the Chief Minister referred to provisions that allow government employees to avail special leave to spend time with and look after their ageing parents and other family members.

Assam has previously introduced the Matri Pitri Vandana initiative, under which government employees can be granted special casual leave to spend time with their parents and parents-in-law.

The Chief Minister said the government would continue to strengthen initiatives aimed at supporting senior citizens and addressing their needs.

His message underlined the importance of recognising the contributions of the elderly and ensuring that they receive the care, respect and attention they deserve.

World Senior Citizens Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the experience and contributions of older persons while also drawing attention to the importance of their welfare, dignity and inclusion in society.

With Assam’s elderly population forming an important part of communities across the state, the Chief Minister’s message reaffirmed the government’s focus on strengthening support systems and promoting the well-being of senior citizens.
