Guwahati, August 15, 2026: Sixteen personnel from Assam’s police, fire service and Home Guard departments have been recognised for their dedicated service on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day.
Among those honoured are 11 Assam Police personnel, who received the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) in recognition of their commitment, professional conduct and contribution while carrying out their responsibilities.
The Assam Police awardees include Inspector General V Siva Prasad Ganjala, Assistant Inspector General Sarmistha Barua, Commandant Santanu Kumar Dutta, Superintendent of Police Amitav Basumatary, Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah and Superintendent of Police Suman Chakraborty.
The list of recipients also includes Deputy Superintendent of Police Aker Ali, Lance Naik Ripon Paul, Lance Naik Nanda Tripura, Lance Naik Surajit Mozumder and Assistant Sub-Inspector Prabin Baro.
Fire Service and Home Guard Personnel Also Honoured
The recognition extended beyond the state police force, with two Assam Fire Service personnel and one Home Guard personnel also receiving the Medal for Meritorious Service.
The medals acknowledge personnel whose service has been marked by dedication, efficiency and a strong sense of responsibility in the discharge of their official duties.
Recognition for Dedicated Public Service
The Independence Day honours highlight the contribution of personnel working across Assam’s security and emergency-response services. Their roles often involve maintaining public safety, responding to emergencies and carrying out demanding responsibilities in challenging circumstances.
The Meritorious Service Medal is intended to recognise such sustained and distinguished service. The honour bestowed on the 16 personnel adds to the significance of this year’s Independence Day celebrations in Assam, acknowledging their contribution to public service and the state’s security and emergency services.
