Thunderstorm and Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Guwahati and Kamrup

Residents across Guwahati and parts of Kamrup district have been advised to remain alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Guwahati, issued a short-duration weather warning for thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to intense rainfall.

The alert, issued at around 2:30 pm, covers Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan districts. According to the forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by rain could develop at isolated locations within the next 30 minutes to two hours.

The warning was issued in the interest of public safety through the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), amid the possibility of rapidly changing weather conditions.

Several parts of Guwahati had already witnessed rainfall earlier in the day. Areas such as Ulubari, Rehabari, GS Road and Paltan Bazar recorded light showers around noon.

Further rainfall is also possible in parts of the city, including Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Six Mile, Rukminigaon, Beltola and Jorabat, according to the forecast.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution while the weather warning remains in effect. People travelling through the city have been advised to be particularly careful on roads that are vulnerable to waterlogging or temporary flooding.

With heavy showers capable of disrupting normal traffic within a short period, commuters are advised to allow additional travel time and avoid unnecessarily entering waterlogged stretches.

Residents are also advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible and exercise caution in open areas until the weather conditions improve.
