The Assam government is set to revive plans for an embankment along the Dikhow river following the severe flooding witnessed in the area this year.
Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain said the proposed embankment had been sanctioned last year, but the project could not proceed because residents had initially refused to provide land for its construction.
At the time, local residents reportedly believed that an embankment was unnecessary as the area had not faced significant flooding in previous years.
However, the situation changed after this year’s floods caused widespread damage. The minister said residents are now prepared to provide the land needed for the project, paving the way for the construction work to move forward.
The proposal is expected to come up for consideration at the Assam Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. If cleared, the project could move into the next stage of implementation.
The planned embankment is expected to strengthen flood protection for communities located near the Dikhow river and help reduce the impact of rising water levels during periods of heavy rainfall.
The development comes as Assam continues to face recurring flood-related challenges, with authorities focusing on strengthening river management and protective infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
