Guwahati: With the recent floods leaving a trail of destruction across parts of Upper Assam, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide a dedicated relief and rehabilitation package for the affected areas.
Gogoi made the request in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on July 30, drawing attention to the situation in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, which he said have suffered extensive damage during the floods.
In his communication, the Congress leader highlighted the impact of the disaster on local communities, including loss of lives, damage to public infrastructure and disruption of livelihoods. He stressed the need for substantial support to help the affected districts recover from the destruction.
Demand for Dedicated Relief and Rehabilitation Support
Gogoi has sought a special relief and rehabilitation package from the Centre, arguing that additional assistance is required for recovery and reconstruction in the flood-affected parts of Upper Assam.
The proposed support would be aimed at helping communities recover from the immediate impact of the floods while facilitating the restoration and rebuilding of damaged infrastructure and livelihoods.
The APCC president’s appeal comes as flood-affected communities continue to deal with the consequences of the disaster and the damage caused to essential infrastructure and economic activities.
PM’s Office Acknowledges Request
According to a statement issued in connection with Gogoi’s appeal, the Prime Minister has acknowledged receipt of the letter.
The acknowledgement indicates that the request has been formally received by the Prime Minister’s office, although the statement did not indicate whether a special relief package has been approved or announce any specific financial assistance.
Gogoi’s demand now puts the focus on the Centre’s response to the flood damage in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, particularly regarding rehabilitation and reconstruction measures in the affected areas.
