Guwahati, August 1: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) continued its citywide anti-encroachment campaign on Thursday night by conducting eviction operations in Jalukbari and Basistha Chariali, targeting illegal occupation of public spaces.
The civic body’s enforcement teams removed unauthorised structures and roadside encroachments from roads, footpaths, and other public areas with the objective of improving traffic movement and ensuring pedestrians can use walkways safely.
According to GMC officials, the corporation is adopting a balanced approach by creating awareness among street vendors before taking enforcement action. Vendors found operating on roadsides and footpaths are first informed about the rules and asked to shift voluntarily. Eviction measures are initiated only if they continue occupying public spaces despite repeated warnings.
Officials also stated that the corporation has established designated vending zones and vendor markets across the city to provide an alternative space for street vendors to conduct their businesses. Those currently operating in restricted areas have been encouraged to relocate to these authorised locations.
The latest operation is part of GMC’s broader initiative to reclaim public land from encroachments and improve urban infrastructure. The civic body aims to make Guwahati’s streets more organised, reduce congestion, and create safer, more accessible spaces for commuters and pedestrians.
Authorities indicated that similar enforcement drives will continue in other parts of the city as part of the corporation’s ongoing efforts to maintain public spaces and improve civic amenities.
