Guwahati, July 30: A section of the ceiling inside the Plastic Surgery Department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) collapsed on Thursday, leaving four patients injured and triggering panic inside the ward.
According to preliminary information, a portion of the ceiling unexpectedly fell while patients were inside the department, causing injuries to four individuals. Hospital staff rushed to the spot immediately and shifted the injured patients for medical attention.
Officials at GMCH said all four patients are out of danger and are receiving treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.
Initial findings indicate that the affected portion of the ceiling had been showing signs of deterioration for some time. The incident is suspected to have been caused by ageing infrastructure and inadequate maintenance, although the exact reason behind the collapse has not yet been officially confirmed.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the condition of infrastructure at Assam’s premier government medical institution. Patients and attendants have raised concerns over the safety of hospital buildings, particularly older sections that may require urgent repairs and structural assessment.
