Guwahati, Assam: AIUDF President and Binnakandi MLA Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on Friday submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging the state government to strengthen healthcare services and accelerate relief measures in flood-affected districts across the state.
In the memorandum, Ajmal called for the immediate deployment of additional doctors, paramedical personnel, mobile medical teams, ambulances and essential medicines, along with uninterrupted supplies of child nutrition, safe drinking water and animal fodder to support people affected by the floods.
Referring to his recent visits to the flood-hit districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo and the Binnakandi Assembly constituency, Ajmal said he had witnessed the widespread devastation and the hardships faced by displaced families.
He stated that the floods have caused extensive humanitarian, economic and environmental damage, displacing thousands of families who are now living in relief camps. Several lives have been lost, while many people remain missing. The inundation has also destroyed standing paddy crops across large agricultural areas, severely affecting the livelihoods of farmers.
Ajmal further pointed out that damaged roads and railway infrastructure have disrupted transport links, isolated remote villages and affected educational institutions and normal public life in several parts of the state.
Expressing concern over public health risks, the AIUDF leader warned that contaminated drinking water and inadequate sanitation could lead to outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid. He stressed that children, pregnant women, elderly citizens and other vulnerable groups require immediate medical attention and nutritional support.
The memorandum urged the Health Department to ensure adequate deployment of medical personnel and mobile healthcare services in relief camps and flood-affected villages. It also called for the continuous supply of safe drinking water, baby food, hygiene kits, sanitation materials and mosquito-control measures.
Ajmal further appealed to the departments of Health, Revenue, Public Health Engineering, Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs (PDS), Disaster Management, Animal Husbandry and other concerned agencies to strengthen rescue operations, ensure uninterrupted relief distribution, protect both human and livestock lives, and restore essential public services at the earliest.
While acknowledging the efforts already undertaken by the state government, district administrations and frontline workers, Ajmal said the scale of the disaster demands intensified relief and rehabilitation measures to ensure that no flood-affected family is deprived of healthcare, food, shelter, sanitation or other basic necessities.
The memorandum comes as Assam continues to face one of its most challenging flood situations in recent years, with relief and rescue operations underway across several districts to assist affected communities and restore normalcy.
