Guwahati, July 23: More than 9 lakh people living in over 1,800 villages across 25 districts have been affected by the ongoing floods in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday while outlining the scale of the disaster and the government’s ongoing response.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said the floods have so far claimed 41 lives, while thousands of livestock have been washed away. Describing the devastation as unprecedented, he noted that several villages have witnessed flooding on a scale not seen in recent history.

According to Sarma, the crisis has been triggered by a combination of upstream cloudbursts and localized heavy rainfall, with precipitation recorded at 436 per cent above normal in some areas, leading to widespread inundation across the state.
He said rescue and evacuation operations are being carried out around the clock through a coordinated effort involving the Indian Air Force (IAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and various state agencies. Air and boat operations are continuing in several flood-affected districts to evacuate stranded residents and deliver essential assistance.
The Chief Minister said the state has established more than 148 relief camps, where nearly 30,000 people are currently taking shelter. Relief teams have also distributed over 3 lakh kilograms of rice, along with drinking water and other essential supplies, in the worst-affected districts, with additional consignments being dispatched.
Looking ahead, Sarma said the Assam Government is preparing a comprehensive rehabilitation package in coordination with the Government of India to support affected families after the floodwaters recede.
He also announced plans to initiate structured discussions with neighbouring states once the immediate crisis eases to strengthen inter-state coordination for managing the impact of upstream cloudbursts and reducing the risk of similar disasters in the future.
Authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation as rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts remain underway across several parts of the state.
