Guwahati, July 19: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) conducted a late-night eviction drive in the Ganeshguri area to remove unauthorised encroachments, saying the operation was aimed at improving traffic movement and ensuring safer access for pedestrians.
According to the civic body, the drive was carried out on Friday night as part of its enforcement measures to clear public roads and footpaths of illegal occupation. The operation targeted structures and encroachments that were obstructing the free movement of vehicles and pedestrians in one of the city’s busiest commercial and traffic junctions.
Sharing details of the operation in a post on X, GMC said the eviction drive forms part of its continuing initiative to maintain public infrastructure, improve road safety and keep civic spaces free from unauthorised encroachments.
The corporation stated that conducting the operation during the night helped minimise disruption to traffic and commercial activities in the locality while allowing enforcement teams to carry out the exercise more efficiently.
Ganeshguri is one of Guwahati’s major commercial and transportation hubs, witnessing heavy traffic throughout the day. Encroachments along roads and footpaths have often been identified as a factor contributing to congestion and inconvenience for commuters and pedestrians.
GMC said it has been undertaking similar eviction drives in different parts of the city as part of its broader efforts to improve urban mobility and ensure better utilisation of public spaces. The civic body also appealed to residents, business establishments and vendors to cooperate with authorities and refrain from occupying public land without permission.
The corporation said enforcement drives against illegal encroachments will continue in accordance with municipal regulations, with the objective of maintaining smoother traffic flow, safer pedestrian movement and improved civic infrastructure across Guwahati.
