Makum, July 7: Alleging poor-quality repair work and continued neglect of a key stretch of National Highway 37, the Makum unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has urged the district administration to take immediate steps to restore the highway.
The student body submitted a memorandum to the co-district commissioner, claiming that the condition of the highway has remained unsatisfactory despite repeated appeals to the authorities. According to AASU, several portions of the road continue to be dotted with large potholes, posing a serious threat to commuters and disrupting the smooth movement of vehicles.
In its memorandum, AASU alleged that the repair work undertaken by the Public Works Department (PWD) has been inadequate. It claimed that instead of carrying out permanent restoration, damaged sections were temporarily patched using sand and gravel, which has failed to improve the road’s condition.
The organisation expressed concern that the deteriorating highway could lead to road accidents, particularly during the monsoon season when damaged stretches become more hazardous. It urged the administration to ensure that repair works are carried out according to proper engineering standards rather than through temporary measures.
Calling for swift intervention, the AASU unit demanded comprehensive repair and maintenance of the affected sections of NH-37, stating that a durable solution is necessary to ensure safer travel and improve connectivity for residents and daily commuters in the Makum region.
