Sivasagar: Panic has gripped residents of Betbari No. 2 Konwar Gaon in Assam’s Sivasagar district following repeated tiger attacks in the area over the past two months.
According to local residents, a tiger has allegedly been roaming near the village and attacking cattle, creating fear among villagers living close to forest areas. Residents claimed that nearly 15 to 20 cows and goats have already fallen prey to the animal during the last two months.
A local representative said that a cow belonging to a youth identified as Navajyoti Chetia was recently attacked by the tiger, leaving the animal critically injured. Villagers alleged that despite informing the Forest Department multiple times, no effective action has yet been taken to capture the animal.
Locals stated that fear has spread across the village, especially during the evening and night hours, as many people are now hesitant to step outside their homes due to safety concerns.
One villager recounted his personal experience of allegedly spotting the tiger while searching for medicinal herbs in a nearby forested area. He claimed that he saw the tiger attacking a calf near a pond and trying to drag it away after biting its neck.
Residents also expressed frustration over the repeated livestock losses, saying the attacks have severely affected their livelihoods. Several villagers alleged that they have not received adequate assistance or support regarding the incidents.
The people of the area have now appealed to the Forest Department to immediately trap the tiger and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents and livestock in the village.
Forest officials are yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
