Residents and commuters in Barpeta Road have expressed serious concern over a massive pothole that has developed on a busy roadway near a police outpost, accusing the Public Works Department (PWD) of negligence.
Locals alleged that minor accidents occur regularly at the damaged stretch, with at least two e-rickshaws reportedly overturning on Saturday morning due to the dangerous condition of the road. The route serves as a major connecting road from Barpeta Road to Howly, Barpeta town, and the medical college, making it heavily used by ambulances and daily commuters.
Residents fear that the deep crater could lead to a devastating road accident at any moment, especially during nighttime when heavy dumpers and overloaded vehicles travel through the area at high speed.
Speaking on the issue, locals questioned the inaction of the PWD despite the road being under its jurisdiction. They claimed the department appeared to be in “deep slumber” while the condition of the road continued to deteriorate.
Concern has also been raised over the safety of patients being transported through the route in ambulances. Locals warned that if an ambulance were to hit the pothole, it could create a life-threatening situation for patients inside.
Citizens have urged the authorities to immediately repair the damaged stretch and take strict action against overloaded vehicles, which many believe are responsible for the worsening condition of the road.
