Sherman Ali Hits Out at Rivals, Says Political Conspiracies Against Him Backfired

Assam MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on his political opponents, claiming that leaders who allegedly conspired against him have themselves suffered political setbacks.

Speaking during a media interaction, Sherman Ali said several political parties in Assam had once treated him as “untouchable,” which deeply hurt him personally and politically.

Referring to his critics, the MLA said those who worked against him eventually faced defeat in elections. He claimed that senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi lost politically after allegedly targeting him.

Using a popular phrase, Sherman Ali remarked, “No one can harm a person protected by God, and no one can save a person abandoned by God.”

The legislator also reflected on his political journey, saying he had once felt isolated after raising issues related to river erosion and the rights of poor people. According to him, many parties distanced themselves from him because of his outspoken stand on public issues.

However, he said his political fortunes changed after joining the All India Trinamool Congress. Sherman Ali thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for appointing him as the leader of the TMC Legislature Party in Assam.

He stated that the move had given him a larger political platform and greater opportunities in legislative politics.

During the interaction, Sherman Ali also criticised the Congress party’s organisational structure in Assam. He alleged that the party lacked grassroots organisational strength despite securing support from Muslim voters in the state.

According to him, Congress benefited mainly from anti-BJP sentiment rather than organisational efficiency. He claimed many Congress booth-level committees exist only on paper and urged the party to focus more seriously on strengthening its grassroots network instead of internal rivalries.

The MLA further advised opposition parties to work on organisational unity if they aim to effectively challenge the BJP in future elections.
