Assam MLA Ramakanta Deuri Sparks Controversy Over Remarks on Forest Land Encroachment

A fresh controversy has erupted in Assam after a video surfaced allegedly showing MLA Ramakanta Deuri encouraging people to occupy forest land and assuring them of protection and land rights.

In the viral interaction with members of the public, the MLA is heard telling people not to fear any consequences while occupying forest areas. He allegedly said, “If anything happens, I will take the bullet first. You do not need to worry.”

During the gathering, Deuri claimed that large portions of land had already been occupied by individuals in the past and urged people to continue taking possession of land which he described as ancestral property belonging to their forefathers.

The MLA further stated that he would stand beside the people and support them. He also allegedly assured the gathering that permanent land pattas could be arranged for those occupying the land.

In the video, Deuri emotionally referred to the land as part of the heritage of indigenous communities, saying the remains of their ancestors would be found beneath the soil. He also mentioned debates in the Assam Assembly regarding the definition of “Khilonjia” or indigenous people.

The remarks have triggered strong reactions, especially because they relate to alleged encroachment on forest land, an issue that remains highly sensitive in Assam. Environmental concerns, land rights disputes, and eviction drives have frequently sparked political and public debates across the state.

During the interaction, some members of the crowd also expressed support for the MLA’s stance, while Deuri repeatedly assured them that he would remain with them in any confrontation over the issue.

The video has now gone viral on social media, drawing criticism from various quarters who have questioned whether a public representative should openly encourage occupation of protected forest areas.

However, no official statement or clarification had been issued by the MLA at the time of filing this report.
