A major controversy has erupted in Assam after a social media comment allegedly threatening journalist and activist Garima Saikia Garg went viral online. The post, reportedly made by a Facebook user identified as Basudeb Kalita, has triggered outrage and raised serious concerns over online threats and political intolerance.
The controversy began after a screenshot of a Facebook comment surfaced on social media. In the comment, the user allegedly wrote threatening remarks against Garima Saikia Garg and several others, including individuals who have been vocal in demanding justice related to the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg.
The viral comment allegedly stated that if necessary, Garima Saikia Garg would be “removed from the world.” The post also mentioned names such as Ravi Sharma, Jatin Bora, Manas Robin, and Victor Das as alleged “targets.” The language used in the comment has drawn widespread criticism from citizens, activists, and social media users.
The incident has also led to political reactions, as some users claimed the accused individual was a supporter of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and linked the matter to the BJP. However, no official confirmation has emerged regarding the political affiliation of the person who allegedly made the comment.
Questions are now being raised over whether the Assam administration and police will take action against the individual behind the alleged threat. Many social media users have demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and strict action if the allegations are found to be true.
The controversy has intensified because Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has publicly expressed admiration for Zubeen Garg on several occasions. Critics are now questioning why supporters demanding justice in matters linked to the singer are allegedly facing hostility online.
At present, there has been no official statement from the Assam Police, the BJP, or the Chief Minister’s Office regarding the viral screenshot. It also remains unclear whether the post was made with genuine intent or whether it could be part of an attempt to create political controversy or defame a political party.
The incident once again highlights growing concerns over hate speech, online threats, and politically charged social media discourse in Assam.
