A New Era in Bengal: Historic Shift as BJP Dethrones TMC; Mamata’s 15-Year Rule Ends

KOLKATA – A seismic shift has occurred in the political landscape of West Bengal as the 2026 Assembly Election results signal the end of a historic era. After 15 years at the helm, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) have been unseated by a surging Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), rewriting the state’s political equations.

The Shattered Dream
The dream of a fourth consecutive term for Mamata Banerjee has been decisively shattered. Despite a high-decibel campaign and a flurry of populist promises, the TMC failed to withstand the “saffron wave.” In a stunning personal blow, the Chief Minister lost her own bastion of Bhabanipur to the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes.

Across the state, the BJP has crossed the double-century mark, securing 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, while the TMC has been relegated to just 80 seats.

Allegations of “Conspiracy”
Refusing to accept the mandate quietly, a visibly agitated Mamata Banerjee addressed the media from her Kalighat residence. She alleged that the results were not a reflection of the people’s will but the outcome of a “deep-rooted conspiracy.”

“This is not democracy; this is a foul game played on the stage of democracy,” Banerjee stated, launching a direct attack on the BJP and the Election Commission. “We were not fighting a political party; we were fighting the entire machinery of the center.”

Violence and Unrest
As the scale of the TMC’s defeat became clear, reports of volatility emerged from across the state. In Siliguri, a Trinamool Congress office was reportedly set ablaze by unidentified miscreants, leading to fears of widespread post-poll violence. The BJP has called for calm, even as its supporters took to the streets in massive victory celebrations, marking the first time the party will form a government in the state.

A Crossroads for Bengal
With the BJP’s rise, the political map of West Bengal has been fundamentally redrawn. The fall of the TMC cabinet—where 22 out of 35 contesting ministers lost their seats—suggests a structural rejection of the incumbent leadership.

As the state stands at this historic crossroads, the question reverberating through the streets of Kolkata and beyond is simple: Is this the definitive end of the Trinamool era, or the beginning of an unprecedented new struggle for Bengal’s soul?
